Bulldogs Sweep Pair of Matches, Earn First Wins of Spring Season

SUMTER, SC  - The Citadel men's tennis team swept their doubleheader on Saturday to win its first two matches of the season, beating Newberry College 7-2 before blanking USC Sumter 9-0.

  • The Bulldogs won 2-of-3 doubles matches as Hayden Shoemake and Sebastian Kamieniecki won 8-6 at the top doubles flight.
  • Shoemake, Teo Cariov and Kamieniecki all won their singles matches as the Bulldogs went 3-0 in 1-3 singles.
  • Noah Van Dyke had the match of the day at 4-singles, winning the first set in a tiebreaker 7-5 before dropping the second set, 2-6. He rebounded in the third set, winning 6-2, to take the match.
The Citadel 9, USC Sumter 0
  • The Bulldogs swept the doubles matches including Ted Bagwell and Cariov cruising 8-2 at 2-doubles as CIT held a 3-0 lead heading to singles play.
  • Cariov bageled his opponent in the first set but found himself in a third set after dropping the second 3-6. The grad transfer responded in a big way, cruising to a 6-1 third set win to take the match.
  • At 5-singles, Bagwell dropped his opening set quickly, 0-6, but battled back, taking sets two and three 6-2, 6-1 respectively to comeback and win the match.
