CHARLESTON, SC. - The Citadel men's tennis team dropped the doubles point but came back to win 4-of-6 singles matches to beat the College of Charleston for the first time since 2008, 4-3, on Saturday afternoon.
Today's home victory was also the first over the Cougars since 1990 (lost 14 straight home matchups entering today).
THE CITADEL 4, CofC 3
- Teo Cariov / Ted Bagwell cruised to a 6-0 win at 2-doubles, but The Citadel dropped the other two matches to trail 1-0 heading into singles play.
- Hayden Shoemake won the opening 1-singles set 6-1 but fell 4-6 in the second to go to a third set tiebreaker. This time the senior would prevail 6-4 to take the match.
- Cariov had a similar fate at 3-singles as he won 6-2 in the first before trading 6-1 sets to also win in three.
- Lucas Robins battled back from losing a heartbreaking first set 6-7 (10-12) to prolong the match to a third set after a 7-5 win in the second. Unfortunately, his 5-singles foe would outlast him 6-4 in the third to win the match.
- Noah Van Dyke doubled up his opponent 6-3 in the first before going to a tiebreaker in the second, where he blanked his 4-singles foe 7-0 to win in straight sets 6-3, 7-6.
- Sebastian Kamieniecki fell 1-and-2 at 2-singles but Bagwell used a 7-3 tiebreaker to take the opening set before earning a 6-2 win in the second to win 7-6, 6-2.
