Rivals The Citadel and Charleston Southern Announce Lowcountry Boil Bowl

7/3/2024 11:00:00 AM

CHARLESTON, S.C. – The Citadel and Charleston Southern announced Wednesday morning that the schools' football teams will establish an official label for the long-standing rivalry between the two Charleston-based programs: The Lowcountry Boil Bowl. The inaugural contest has already been slated for Saturday, Aug. 31, 2024 at Buccaneer Field, kickoff set for 6 p.m. Notably, the annual contest will feature the programs squaring off for a trophy filled to the brim with Lowcountry Boil, reinforcing the victory as both the hardware and seafood feast are presented to the victor following the conclusion of the game.

The name for the rivalry draws its roots from the local food specialty people in Charleston gather around regularly to create and share memories. The big one-pot meal was allegedly invented by Richard Gay, owner of a seafood company from a small town called Frogmore. He originally called it "Frogmore Stew" as homage to his hometown, but over the years the dish has become more popularly known as 'Lowcountry Boil' because of the key ingredient, shrimp, which is a principal product of the Lowcountry and Charleston communities.

Additionally, the teams will have multiple players complete a service project in conjunction with one another in the weeks leading up to the season-opening clash. Each year that the universities compete against each other, the host school will be tasked with selecting the project as they look to serve the greater Charleston community. Additionally, part of the day's festivities will include a fun competition between members of each of the programs.

This season's matchup will mark the 14th official clash between the schools in program history with The Citadel currently leading the rivalry behind a 7-3 record.

The Citadel won the opening trio of matchups in the series with the first-ever contest coming on Nov. 21, 2002 ending in a Bulldogs victory via 53-19 mark. The Bucs claimed their first victory on Sept. 9, 2006. Following back-to-back wins in the series from The Citadel in 2007 and 2012, Charleston Southern went on the longest winning streak in series history, taking four-in-a-row between the 2013-2015 seasons under then-head coach Jamey Chadwell. The Bulldogs snapped the streak with victories in 2018 and 2019. Charleston Southern claimed the W in the most recent installment on Sept. 11, 2021 via a final score of 38-21.
