JOHNSON CITY, TENN. – The Citadel fell in straight sets to ETSU (19-25, 16-25, 15-25) on Thursday night inside Brooks Gymnasium.
Rachel Reininger led the Bulldogs in kills with 11, followed by
Gwen Berry with six and
Sam Barnes with four. It was the second straight match for Reininger, leading The Citadel in kills, as she recorded 12 against Mercer.
Luci Lippelgoos recorded three total blocks, bringing her season total to 46.0.
Greta Pleuss had a match-high 25 assists. Both
Jess Martin and
Gwen Berry contributed eight digs each.
Makayla Bays led the Buccaneers with 12 kills.
Set 1
The Citadel built an early 8-2 lead with a 7-0 scoring run, sparked by a Reininger kill. ETSU managed to tie the set at 10-10 with a 3-0 run. The Buccaneers then took the lead over The Citadel at 15-12 after a 5-0 run. ETSU's lead grew to five points at 20-15, which kept the Bulldogs out of reach in the comeback as they would take the first set at 25-19.
Set 2
ETSU started the second set with a 5-0 run, which then grew to a six-point lead at 10-4 on an attack error by The Citadel. The Buccaneers held as much as an 11-point advantage with a 4-0 run at 17-6. A kill from Reininger made it 24-16, but the Buccaneers finished the set with a kill to take a 2-0 lead.
Set 3
ETSU started with a 5-2 lead over The Citadel, but the Bulldogs responded with a 4-0 scoring run to take the lead at 6-5. The Citadel was able to narrow the lead to 10-9 with a kill from Barnes and an attack error from the Buccaneers. ETSU responded with a 5-0 run to take the lead again at 15-9. Barnes' second kill of the set made it 23-15, but the Buccaneers finished the set and won the match at 25-15.
