CULLOWHEE, N.C. – The Citadel basketball team led by five at the break before weathering a strong start to the second half by the Western Carolina University Catamounts, who opened up a 10-point advantage with just over six minutes to play in the game.
The Bulldogs pulled within two, 68-66, with 3:33 remaining before
Cam Glover's corner 3-ball at the buzzer appeared to send the game to overtime, however, after an official review, it was deemed he released the ball a fraction of a second late to hand the Bulldogs a 76-73 defeat on Saturday evening.
Brody Fox scored a game-high 23 points, his ninth 20+ point performance of the season while also hauling in eight rebounds.
Christian Moore reset his career-high from Wednesday with 20 points while
Sola Adebisi added 10 and seven boards.
First Half
- Fox's three-point play gave The Citadel a 22-12 edge at the 8:51 mark of the first half.
- WCU responded with a 14-7 run to trim the margin to three, 29-26, with 3:40 remaining in the stanza as The Citadel called a timeout.
- The Catamounts scored the next basket as well but six straight points by Fox down the stretch gave the Bulldogs a 35-30 lead at the intermission.
Second Half
- WCU began the half with a 17-6 stretch to go ahead 47-41 six and change into the second session.
- The teams traded buckets for the next five minutes before six straight Catamount points stretched the difference to 10, 64-54, with 6:13 remaining.
- Five quick points from Moore, including a 5-for-5 stretch from the line by the Bulldogs as a team cut the deficit to two, 68-66, with 3:33 left.
- WCU lead 72-70 and The Citadel missed a 3-pointer but an off-ball foul led to a Bulldogs 1-and-1, which they made just the front end of, to trail by one with a minute remaining.
- On the ensuing possession, WCU missed a floater in the paint but the tip-in was good to nudge the margin back to three, 74-71, with 38 ticks left.
- The Citadel took a timeout in the front court before Paxton Davidson's scoop layup with 20 seconds left cut the deficit back to one, 74-73.
- The Bulldogs tried to trap and had to foul as the Catamounts made both from the line.
- Fox drove to the basket, but his attempt was blocked out of bounds as The Citadel had one more chance with eight seconds remaining.
- Moore missed a contested corner three as the ball laid loose on the floor, it was tipped to Glover whose opposite corner three at the buzzer was good and ruled live to have gotten off in time.
- The officials would review the play and deemed that Glover released the ball a fraction of a second after the clock hit zeroes as The Citadel fell 76-73.
