CHARLESTON, S.C. – The Citadel basketball team led 41-40 with 11:43 remaining in the second half but a 9-2 Mercer Bears run opened up an eight-point edge on the way to a 62-52 Bulldogs loss on Wednesday evening.
Brody Fox scored a game-high 23 points, his tenth 20+ point performance of the season.
Christian Moore added 14 points, his sixth straight game in double figures, to go along with eight boards and two assists.
First Half
- An 8-0 Bulldogs spurt gave them an early 16-6 lead at 11:54 mark of the opening session.
- Mercer responded out of the timeout with a 9-0 run of its own to cut the deficit to one, 16-15.
- A Bears 3-pointer broke a 24-24 tie with 1:55 left to play as Mercer held a 29-25 edge at the break.
Second Half
- Moore's 3-pointer cut the deficit to one, 31-30, but Mercer responded with the next five to go ahead 36-30.
- Paxton Davidson found Moore for another wing three, once again pulling The Citadel within one, 38-37, five minutes into the second half.
- A Mercer dunk extended the margin to five, 48-43, at the nine-minute mark before a Bears layup nudged the difference to eight, 53-45, leading to a Bulldogs timeout with 5:31 remaining.
- A pair of Sola Adebisi free throws chopped the margin in half, 55-51, but the Bears took advantage of an offensive rebound on their next possession, 57-51, before both teams went scoreless over the next 2:08.
- After the Bulldogs missed a 3-pointer, The Citadel had to foul and Mercer made 5-of-6 free throws in the final minute to win 62-52.
