Bulldogs Falter in Sunday’s Rubber Match Against Samford; Daniels Homers

BIRMINGHAM, ALA. – The Citadel lost 8-5 in the rubber match of the SoCon series against Samford on Sunday afternoon. Phillips Daniels hit his first home run of the season.

How It Happened
  • The Citadel scored the first run of the game with an RBI ground out by Travis Elliott, bringing TJ Anderson home to make it 1-0 in the first inning.
  • Samford's Parker McDonald tied the game at 1-1 in the bottom of the fourth inning with a solo home run.
  • Samford scored a run in the bottom of the fifth with an RBI single from Matthew Strand to make it 2-1.
  • Samford extended their lead to 5-1 in the sixth inning with two RBI doubles and an RBI single.
  • Gus Gandy increased Samford's lead to five runs with a sacrifice fly RBI to make it 6-1 in the seventh inning.
  • The Bulldogs scored three runs in the top of the eighth inning, thanks to an Elliott RBI single up the middle that brought Daniels home, increasing the score to 6-2.  
  • Anthony Hausner drove in TJ Anderson with an RBI single to the right side, cutting the lead to three runs at 6-3.
  • The Bulldogs scored on a wild pitch from Samford to make it a two-run game, scoring Elliott to make it 6-4.
  •  Samford scored two runs in the bottom of the eighth inning on an RBI single and a hit-by-pitch with the bases loaded, bringing the score to 8-4 in favor of Samford.
  • Phillips Daniels hit a solo home run in the top of the ninth inning, making it 8-5.
 
Inside the Box Score
  • The Citadel scored five runs on ten hits, with TJ Anderson and Anthony Hausner recording multi-hit days.
  • Anderson went 4-for-5 at the plate, hitting two doubles. This marks the second consecutive game in which the Bulldogs recorded four hits, following Travis Elliott's performance of four hits on April 12.
  • Hausner went 3-for-4 with an RBI and recorded his third three-hit game of the season.  
  • Travis Elliott drove in two runs, increasing his season total to 25 RBIs, the highest of his career in a single season as a Bulldog.  
  • Chandler Anderson (1-2) received the loss after recording a career-high eight strikeouts on 5.0 innings pitched with five earned runs.
  • Mason Blasche (5-0) earned the win for Samford after throwing 7.0 innings with seven strikeouts and three earned runs.
 
On Deck
The Citadel remains on the road as they head to Columbia, South Carolina, to face the South Carolina Gamecocks on April 15. The first pitch is scheduled for 6:30 p.m.
