CHARLESTON, S.C. – The Citadel volleyball team lost in four sets (14-25, 16-25, 25-22, 21-25) to College of Charleston on Monday night inside TD Arena.
The Bulldogs led the Cougars nine blocks to seven, with
Luci Lippelgoos recording a total of six blocks. Lippelgoos posted her second six-block match of the season, bringing her season total to 21 blocks.
The Cougars led the Bulldogs 51-38 in kills and 14-6 in service aces.
Sammie Sabra led the Bulldogs with a season-high ten kills on a .348 attack percentage, followed by
Alexa Psotka with a season-high nine kills.
Lydia Larson posted a season-high 18 assists.
Izzy Marinelli recorded a match-high 14 kills for College of Charleston.
Set 1: College of Charleston jumped to an early 8-3 lead over The Citadel in the first set. A kill from Sabra and an attack error kept the set 15-10, but the Cougars went on a 5-0 run to extend their lead to 20-10. Two kills and a service ace from the Cougars gave them the set one at 25-14.
Set 2: Early in the second set, the Cougars scored six straight points to take a 9-2 lead, followed by an 8-0 run to extend their lead to 17-4. College of Charleston's lead increased to 12 at 22-10. A 4-0 run by The Citadel brought it to 22-14, but the comeback was halted when an attack error from The Citadel ended the set at 25-16.
Set 3: The Bulldogs took an early 9-4 lead to start the third set with a kill from Psotka and four attack errors by the Cougars. College of Charleston closed the gap to 12-11 with a 4-0 run. The Citadel then extended its lead to 20-16 on a 5-1 rally, with kills from
Jordyn Sims,
Karlie Vogelheim, Psotka, and Sabra. The Cougars narrowed the lead to two points at 24-22, but a kill from
Rachel Reininger gave the Bulldogs the win in set three.
Set 4: The Cougars led early 9-5 over the Bulldogs, but the Bulldogs responded with a 4-0 run to tie the set at 9-9. Both teams traded points in the fourth set until the Cougars went on another four-point run to take the lead at 22-18. A kill from Sabra cut the gap to 22-20, but it wasn't enough as Marinelli for the Cougars recorded three consecutive kills to end the set and match at 25-21.
