
Bulldogs Fall to Charleston Southern in Playa Bowls Invitational Opener

CHARLESTON, S.C. -- The Citadel (2-5) lost to Charleston Southern (5-3) behind a 3-0 margin Thursday, falling 13-25, 20-25, 15-25 in the opening match of the Playa Bowls Invitational.
Luci Lippelgoos led the Bulldogs with six kills while hitting .455. Allie Davison finished with a team-high 11 assists and added one kill. Greta Pleuss recorded 10 assists and converted her lone attack for a kill. Mia Watson collected a team-high eight digs.
For Charleston Southern, Brynn Minter posted 11 kills, seven service aces and six digs. Faith Burch added nine kills on 14 attacks with one error. Tristin Sutton recorded 19 assists, nine digs and a service ace while Presley Morris collected 10 digs and added an ace.
First Set | 13-25
- The Bulldogs built a 6-3 lead behind kills from Emma Pastusic, Jordyn Sims, Lippelgoos and Rachel Reininger, along with a Jess Martin service ace.
- Charleston Southern answered to move ahead 7-6, and after Pleuss tied the set at 8-8 with a kill, the Buccaneers pushed back in front at 11-8.
- Sims pulled the Bulldogs back within two at 12-10, but the Buccaneers scored six straight points to extend the margin to 18-10.
- Lippelgoos added a kill during the late stretch, but the Buccaneers closed the set with the final four points, including two Brynn Minter aces, to win 25-13.
Second Set | 20-25
- The Citadel went ahead 4-1 behind kills from Megan Stone and Sims, then held an 8-5 edge after consecutive Buccaneer attack errors.
- The Buccaneers moved in front during the middle of the set, then won seven of eight points to turn a 14-13 Bulldogs lead into a 20-15 CSU advantage, with Minter recording three kills and an ace in that stretch.
- The Citadel cut the deficit to 21-19 as Lippelgoos and Reininger added kills around two Buccaneer errors.
- Charleston Southern answered with the next three points, including two Jenna Kitchens kills and a Sutton ace, before closing the set 25-20.
Third Set | 15-25
- Gwen Berry opened the set with an ace, and the Bulldogs stayed even through the early points with Elizabeth Miller kills tying the score at 8-8 and 9-9.
- The Buccaneers created separation with five straight points to move ahead 14-9, utilizing two Adeline Wieler aces and two Minter kills during the stretch.
- Sims and Stone helped the Bulldogs cut the margin to 14-11, but the Buccaneers answered with another run to push the lead to 20-13.
- Miller added a late kill for the Bulldogs before the Buccaneers scored the final four points to take the set 25-15.
