JOHNSON CITY, Tenn. — Logan Applegate posted highs in points and rebounds as a Bulldog, but The Citadel (6–15, 3–5 SoCon) fell to ETSU (15–6, 7–1 SoCon), 84–55, Friday night inside Freedom Hall.
Applegate scored 18 points with four three-pointers, marking his third game this season with at least four made threes, and added a team-high six rebounds.
Braxton Williams contributed eight points and three assists.
The Citadel started the game with a 6–0 lead in the first two minutes after
Sola Adebisi connected on a 3-pointer on the opening possession, and Applegate followed with a fast-break 3 to extend the advantage. ETSU responded with a sustained run midway through the first half, using interior scoring and second-chance opportunities to regain control. The Buccaneers closed the opening period on a 13–3 stretch to take a 49–27 lead into halftime.
The Bulldogs shot 39.1 percent from the field in the first half, including 4-of-11 from three-point range, but ETSU extended its control after the break. The Buccaneers shot 48.0 percent in the second half while holding The Citadel to 33.3 percent shooting.
The Citadel shot 35.8 percent from the field and 40.7 percent from three-point range, while going 6-of-15 at the free-throw line, its lowest free-throw percentage of the season. The Bulldogs totaled 12 fast-break points and received 20 points from the bench, led by
Christian Moore and
Dante Kearse with eight points apiece.
Jaylen Smith led ETSU with 17 points, while Cam Morris III added 16. Blake Barkley recorded 14 points and 10 rebounds for the Buccaneers, who finished with a 42–24 rebounding advantage and scored 40 points in the paint.
Following the game, head coach
Ed Conroy said, "They're a good team and very talented up front. We did not do a good enough job on the glass, and that hurt us, especially with points in the paint. We knew that coming in, and we need to be better moving forward."
The Bulldogs return home Thursday, Jan. 29, to host VMI in Southern Conference play at McAlister Field House in Charleston, South Carolina. Tipoff is set for 7 p.m. The teams last met Jan. 17 in Lexington, Virginia, where The Citadel earned an 82–68 road win, tying the all-time series at 63–63. The game is presented by Hal Cobb '92 and Cobb Hammett Law.
