The Citadel Drops Midweek Clash Against No. 19 Clemson, 9-3

CHARLESTON, S.C. — In spite of a season-best 5,298 fans filling out Joseph P. Riley, Jr. Park, The Citadel (8-11) faltered against No. 19 Clemson (18-4) via a 9-3 setback on Wednesday evening.

Jayden Williams generated a team-best two hits across four at-bats, good for his second straight game with multiple hits. Garrett Fulmer added to the offense with two hits and an RBI, including a double. Matthew Lively contributed a run and a hit as well.

Andrew Bowers (0-2) handled the start, allowing seven hits and three earned runs across 3.2 frames of action en route to the loss. Jackson Bottar followed with a 1.0 inning stint, surrendering one hit and four unearned runs along with two walks.

Kaden Kiser tallied an inning of work in relief, giving up two hits and two earned runs while issuing four walks. Finally, Liam Foley stepped in for 3.1 frames of hitless pitching, surrendering no runs with one walk and setting down one batter on strikes.

For the visiting Tigers, Tyler Lichtenberger posted a 3-for-5 outing with five RBIs and two runs scored. Eston Simpson (4-1) secured the win behind 2.0 early frames of work, allowing one earned run on zero hits and a pair of walks along with a game-best four strikeouts.

"Our guys were prepared to play, but we didn't perform well in any part of the game," said head coach Russell Triplett. "Too many free bases, we failed to execute the basics, and we just didn't look comfortable out there. And you've got to give their pitchers a lot of credit, they challenged us at the plate."

Up next, the Bulldogs head to Macon, Georgia, to take on Mercer on Friday, March 20 at 6 p.m. at Claude Smith Field.
