Early Lead Evaporates, The Citadel Drops Finale Against UNCG, 9-4

CHARLESTON, S.C. — The Citadel (21-22, 6-9 SoCon) fell to UNCG (16-28, 3-12 SoCon) in a 9-4 defeat on Sunday afternoon at Joseph P. Riley, Jr. Park, closing out the three-game series with a 2-1 advantage.

Christian Stratis recorded two hits, including a double and a triple, and scored one run while driving in another. Jayden Williams drew two walks and stole two bases. Garrett Fulmer added two hits, including a double, and scored once. Aryan Patel went 2-for-4 at the plate.

Bryce Coulter started on the mound, pitching 3.0 innings, allowing three earned runs on six hits, striking out three batters, and issuing no walks. Liam Foley followed, allowing three earned runs over 1.2 innings, including two home runs, and took his first loss.

Trip Brown pitched 1.1 innings, giving up two earned runs and striking out one. CJ Van Slooten delivered a scoreless inning, allowing no hits and issuing one walk. Ben Brash and Mason Yokum each tossed scoreless outings, with Brash striking out one in 0.2 innings and Yokum keeping the Spartans hitless in his one inning.

For the Spartans, Jacob Budzik went 3-for-5, with two home runs and five RBIs. John Horton (3-2) came in from the bullpen and threw 5.0 innings, allowing four hits, one earned run, while striking out eight to earn the win.

"A disappointing day to finish a great week. I thought we were about as poor as we've been all year. Offensively, we had a zero approach, struck out, and executed poorly," said head coach Russell Triplett. "We didn't execute pitches either. We got dominated in the third game. That was a big game for us and for what we're trying to do. So, a disappointing day, but we'll get back to work next week and see if we can fix some of these issues and correct some of the mistakes we're making."

Up next, the Bulldogs travel to Columbia, S.C., to face South Carolina for a midweek game at Founders Park at 6:30 p.m. on Tuesday, April 28.
