Holmes, Balanced Offense Carries The Citadel Past Presbyterian, 7-2

CLINTON, S.C. -- Fueled by an 7.0-inning, eight-strikeout performance from starter Will Holmes, The Citadel (23-22, 6-9 SoCon) upended host Presbyterian (10-36, 6-12 Big South) in the opening contest of a three-game weekend series, ousting the Blue Hose behind a 7-2 final mark Friday evening at Elton Pollock Field.

Offensively, six different Bulldogs tallied an RBI with Sam Dansky pacing the pack via a two-hit showing. Michael Gibson and TJ Anderson notched a hit, a run scored and an RBI with the latter swiping two bases on the day. Additionally, Aryan Patel posted a hit for an RBI while racking up team-bests in in both runs scored (3) and steals (3).

On the mound, Holmes (4-4) logged individual season-best 7.0 complete innings for the Bulldogs, surrendering just two runs on five hits and four walks while setting down eight batters on strikes. Ben Brash and CJ Van Slooten split the final two frames to close out the contest, giving up just one combined hit and striking out one apiece.

For PC, Cam Mallo generated two hits with one walk while Amman Dewberry and Jonathan Williams each secured an RBI each. Tyrell Williams (1-3) suffered the loss following 4.0 innings of work, allowing five runs --including two earned -- on two hits and four walks with just one strikeout.

"Good start to the series. We didn't do anything great, but played solid in all phases of the game," head coach Russell Triplett said. "Holmes gave us a quality start and our bullpen continued to be good. We played defense and took advantage of a few mistakes they made and executed early in the game."

Next up, the three-game weekend set between The Citadel and Presbyterian continues back in Charleston with game two on Saturday, May 2, with first pitch slated for noon at Joseph P. Riley, Jr. Park.
