CHARLESTON, S.C. - The Citadel community mourns the tragic loss of cadet-athlete Evan Andrew Greenleigh, who passed away April 25, 2026.

Greenleigh, 19, was a member of the Corps of Cadets Class of 2029 and came to The Citadel from Bethesda, Md. He was a mechanical engineering major, a member of Echo Company and a member of The Citadel tennis program.

From the moment he arrived on campus, Greenleigh made an immediate impact on those around him. His energy, focus and positive attitude stood out from day one, both within the tennis program and across The Citadel community.

"Evan's energy and focus level from day one was so high," tennis head coach Chuck Kriese said. "As a cadet-athlete, he balanced the demands of the Corps of Cadets, academics and Division I athletics with humility and a willingness to serve others. He always had a bright, positive attitude and brought great energy to everything he did. He had a service attitude, truly cared for others and loved The Citadel community. His teammates and coaches will remember him not only for his commitment to tennis, but for the joy, kindness and positive energy he brought to the people around him."

Greenleigh represented the values of Honor, Duty and Respect through his work as a cadet, student and teammate. He embraced the demands of life at The Citadel and was remembered by his coaches and teammates for the way he carried himself, supported those around him and cared for the people and community he loved.

The Citadel tennis program, along with 17 additional cadets, traveled to Washington, D.C., to attend Greenleigh's funeral service. The Citadel President Gen. Glenn M. Walters and Provost Sally Selden were also in attendance, joining family, friends, teammates and members of The Citadel community in honoring Greenleigh's life.

In honor of Greenleigh's life and lasting impact, the Evan Greenleigh Memorial Scholarship has been established to support The Citadel tennis program. The scholarship will serve as a lasting tribute to Greenleigh and the example he set as a cadet, student, teammate and member of The Citadel community. Those wishing to learn more or support the fund can do so here.

Greenleigh's impact will continue to be felt by his teammates, coaches, classmates and all who knew him. His love for The Citadel community, his service-minded attitude and the way he cared for others will remain part of the legacy he leaves behind.

The Citadel community extends its thoughts and prayers to Evan's family, friends, teammates and all who knew and loved him.
