SoCon Fast Break Visits The Citadel Ahead of 2026-27 Season

CHARLESTON, S.C. – Richmond Weaver of SoCon Fast Break made a stop at McAlister Field House for an inside look at The Citadel basketball program ahead of the 2026-27 season.
Weaver spent time around practice before sitting down with head coach Ed Conroy and senior Keynan Davis to discuss The Citadel experience, the evolution of college basketball and the upcoming season.
For Conroy, few places carry the significance of McAlister Field House.
"This place is special to me," Conroy said. "We're sitting here, all these guys behind me on the wall, I either played with them or know them very well. I feel very privileged to hold this position right now and kind of be the caretaker of this program."
A 1989 graduate of The Citadel, Conroy's connection to the program dates back nearly four decades. He played for the Bulldogs before beginning a coaching career that has included three separate stops in Charleston.
During his conversation with Weaver, Conroy reflected on his recruitment to The Citadel, his coaching journey and how much college basketball has changed since his time as a cadet-athlete.
He also discussed the changing landscape of college athletics and why he remains optimistic about the impact the game can have on student-athletes.
"Our group last year, as you watched us every day in practice, you saw the same things you've seen for the last 100 years in college athletics," Conroy said. "You saw chemistry. You saw teamwork. You saw grit. You saw guys finding a different version of themselves. You saw guys pushing each other."
The Bulldogs experienced that growth during the second half of last season, earning seven Southern Conference victories, the third-most conference wins by the program in the past 25 years, and defeating Chattanooga in the opening round of the SoCon Basketball Championship. The Citadel also finished January with five victories, its most wins in the month since the 2008-09 season.
"You cannot tell me that college athletics is not still alive and well and the same things you loved about it before," Conroy said. "You might have to look a little harder, but it's still there. It is still magical. It's still an unbelievable experience, and it still changes lives."
Davis joined Weaver for a "Two-Man Weave" segment and discussed his path from Chicago to Charleston, his adjustment to The Citadel's military lifestyle and the growth he has experienced throughout his career.
"At first, I was definitely a little worried, definitely a little nervous," Davis said. "But after all that, it's been easier adapting to it over time."
Now a senior, Davis has taken on an increased leadership role as younger Bulldogs begin navigating many of the same challenges he once faced.
"Just a form of leadership, letting them know you'll be all right," Davis said. "Don't be so caught in the moment. Just keep going."
Davis also spoke about the program's improvement last season, his individual goals entering his senior campaign and the meaning behind wearing the American flag on the back of The Citadel uniform.
The conversation also turned toward the Bulldogs' upcoming season, including the Sept. 27 matchup against College of Charleston at Credit One Stadium as part of the LinkU Invitational.
Conroy said the opportunity fit his goal of finding unique experiences for his players while creating excitement around basketball in Charleston.
Conroy said he is always looking for creative opportunities for the program and viewed the LinkU Invitational as the type of experience his players would enjoy.
"Would our players like it?" Conroy said. "Would they enjoy doing this? If I was like, 'Yeah,' then let's do it."
For Davis, the anticipation surrounding his final season is simple.
"I'm ecstatic," Davis said. "I'm ready to go."
