Biography
FRESHMAN (2015-16): Appeared in 15 games for The Citadel as a freshman and recorded 10 rebounds and made a pair of field goals in 50 total minutes of action on the floor… Played seven minutes in his first career game vs. No. 24 Butler, knocking down a free throw for his first career point... Recorded his first career field goal, blocked shot and assist in limited minutes vs. Stetson... Saw action in all three games at the Palmetto State Shootout, grabbing two boards against Bob Jones… Recorded his second career blocked shot with a monster swat vs. Furman…Scored two points and grabbed two boards in a loss at Chattanooga.
HIGH SCHOOL: Newton signed his National Letter of Intent to play for the Bulldogs after graduating from First Baptist Academy in Naples, Fla. He capped off his senior season by averaging 12.1 ppg, 7.3 rpg and 2.5 apg while hitting 40 percent from 3-point range and 76 percent at the charity stripe.
A gritty defender, Newton was named the Lions’ Defensive Player of the Year Award as he averaged 3.0 bpg and 2.0 spg over the course of the season. His all-around play earned him all-county first team honors and a spot on the Southwest Florida All-Star first team.
Newton earned five varsity letters under head coach Scott Stewart and came into his own in his junior campaign where he averaged 8.1 ppg, 5.6 rbg and 3.2 bpg. He was named Best Defensive Player in the Area and was a vital part of the Lions reaching the Elite Eight round of the Florida High School Athletic Association tournament in 2013, 2014 and 2015.
