Chi Alpha Sigma is the only National College Student Athlete Honor Society and was founded at DePauw University on May 17, 1996, as a student-athlete honor society for the recognition of high academic and athletic achievers at the collegiate level.

The society is an organization of college athletes with high academic achievement, exemplary character, and positive attitude with contributions in their respective sport.
Invitation of college athletes to membership shall be dependent upon the fulfillment of the following criteria, without regard to sport or gender.
The student-athlete:
- Must have achieved at least junior academic standing after the fifth semester.
- Must have achieved a minimum cumulative grade point average of 3.4 (on a 4.0 scale)
- Must have endorsement from the head coach of his/her sport(s)
- Must be of good moral character.
- Application must be approved by the college chapter advisor
 The Citadel chapter, Kappa, was started in 2019. The administration of the program is run by Faculty Advisor Dr. Chip Taylor and Senior Associate Athletic Director Kathy Kroupa.
