CHARLESTON, S.C. - The Citadel wrapped up its 2014 home regular season women's soccer campaign on Friday with a 3-0 loss to Southern Conference-leading Mercer at WLI Field.
The Bulldogs dropped to 5-12 overall and 1-6 in the league, while the Bears remained undefeated in their last eight games and improved to 10-4-2 and 5-0-2 in the SoCon.
Mercer entered the game as the top defensive team in the conference and has allowed only two goals in its seven league contests. The Bears limited the Bulldogs to only five shots and just one on goal.
The Citadel defense held tough in the first half, keeping the game scoreless despite a 10-3 Mercer advantage in shots with
Naomi Carter making four saves over the opening 45 minutes.
The second half started on a bad note for the Bulldogs when a corner kick by Mercer's Lauren Gassie was deflected into The Citadel goal by
Ana Mesa to give the visitors a 1-0 lead just 1:15 into the period.
It stayed a one-goal margin until the 72nd minute when Emma Chandlee made it 2-0. The Bears completed the scoring with just under three minutes left on a goal by Washida Blackman.
Mercer finished with 17 shots, and Carter registered a total of six saves.
Vanessa Aponte and
Kim Maldonado had two shots apiece for The Citadel.
The Bulldogs wrap up the regular season on the road with games at Samford next Friday and Chattanooga two days later.
