Bulldogs Head to Upstate for SoCon Soccer Sojourn

CHARLESTON, S.C. - The Citadel women's soccer team returns to action this weekend with road games at Furman and Wofford.

The Bulldogs (4-8, 0-2 Southern Conference) will be looking to get into the win column in SoCon play when they take on the defending champion Paladins on Friday at 7 p.m. The Citadel dropped its first two league games against VMI and UNCG at home last weekend.

The Citadel remains in the Upstate on Sunday for a 2 p.m. contest against the Terriers. Following this road swing, the Bulldogs play their final three regular season home games against Western Carolina (Oct. 10), East Tennessee State (Oct. 12) and Mercer (Oct. 17).

Furman has won 13 of 14 all-time meetings with the lone Citadel win coming in a 2-1 double overtime victory in the opening round of the 2010 SoCon Tournament. Vanessa Aponte, then a freshman, scored the game-winning goal in that contest and this season leads the Bulldogs with four goals and 10 points.

Naomi Carter continues to rank among the top save producers in the nation, entering the weekend ranked fifth in the country with 81.

The Paladins are 7-2-1 overall, with their only losses coming against Auburn and Georgia, and 1-0-1 in the SoCon with a win over East Tennessee State and a tie against Western Carolina.

Stephanie DeVita is the reigning SoCon Player of the Week after scoring twice in the 3-0 win over the Buccaneers. She has seven goals on the year and 41 in her career, the sixth most in SoCon history. Her five game-winning goals in 2014 are tied for second in the nation.

India Robinson is tied for ninth in the country with eight assists and has 41 in her career, the fourth most in SoCon history.

Wofford (3-6, 0-2) is looking to snap a six-game losing streak when it hosts Mercer on Friday before taking on The Citadel. Maureen Buff is the Terriers' leading scorer with four goals, and Kara Boggs has a 1.20 goals against average with one shutout.

The Bulldogs are 2-10-1 against Wofford but 2-1-1 in the last four meetings, winning 2-1 in 2010 and 3-1 in 2012 and earning a 2-2 tie in 2011.
