BIRMINGHAM, Ala. - Samford opened up a close match with five second half goals to defeat The Citadel 6-0 in the quarterfinals of the Southern Conference tournament.
Samford (13-7) advances to the semifinals next weekend in Cullowhee, N.C., while The Citadel concludes its season with a record of 7-14.
The host Bulldogs led only 1-0 at halftime on a goal by Anna Allen 15 minutes into the contest, with The Citadel able to keep it at that margin despite being outshot 11-2 over the opening 45 minutes.
The second half proved to be a different story as Samford scored three times in a span of six minutes to build a 4-0 cushion. Katie Danehy got it started at the 47:30 mark followed by a penalty kick off the foot of Jermaine Seoposenwe, who also had assists on the first two goals.
A goal by Heather Lacy in the 54th minute completed the surge that put the game out of reach. The Citadel, which finished with seven shots including two each by
Ana Mesa and
Vanessa Aponte, had its best scoring chance in the 69th minute when a shot by Mesa hit the post.
Samford fired 25 shots including 14 on goal and took 14 corner kicks.
Sam Millspaugh made eight saves for The Citadel, while Anna Maddox stopped four shots for Samford.
