Bulldogs Prepare for Dual with Appalachian State

CHARLESTON, S.C. – The Citadel wrestling team returns to the mat on Sunday when it heads to Boone, N.C., for a 2 p.m. Southern Conference match against Appalachian State.

The Bulldogs (4-3 Overall, 2-0 SoCon) are competing in their first non-neutral dual away from McAlister Field House this season. The match can be seen live on the Appalachian State Televison Network.

A series of late decisions by Marshall Haas and Joe Bexley helped lead The Citadel wrestling team to a 20-15 Southern Conference victory over Gardner-Webb on Wednesday evening at McAlister Field House.

Haas posted a 4-1 decision over Gardner-Webb's Boyce Cornwell in the 197-pound classification to provide the Bulldogs (4-3, 2-0 SoCon) with a slim 17-15 advantage.

Bexley followed with a 9-3 decision over fellow heavyweight Justin Kozera to secure The Citadel's third home dual victory of the season. The loss dropped Gardner-Webb to 3-4 overall and 1-1 in league action.

The Dogs also got an impressive outing from Joaquin Marquez, who opened action at 125 with a 6-2 decision over Cortez Starkes, earning his 15th victory of the season.

Another key to the Dogs success were Aaron Walker (157), who forged The Citadel in front by four points midway through the dual, with a 13-5 major decision over GWU's Kyle Ash.

Appalachian State University last competed on Sunday when it hosted a tri-meet with visiting Campbell and Binghamton. The Mountaineers won matches against both schools to improve to 5-6 on the season.

In the first match Appalachian cruised to a 50-3 victory over Southern Conference foe Campbell. The Camels forfeited their first four matches which put the Mountaineers out to a big advantage.

In the second matchup of the day Appalachian took on Binghamton. Dominic Parisi got the Mountaineers off to a solid start with a 4-2 decision win over David White a 2014 NCAA qualifer.

The Bearcats would earn decision wins at 184 pounds and 197 pounds before Dejournette defeated Tyler Deuel in an 8-4 decision to seal the 22-15 win.
