Bulldogs Improve to 2-0 in SoCon

CHARLESTON, S.C. – The Citadel football team downed the Wofford Terriers 39-12 on Saturday afternoon inside Johnson Hagood Stadium. The win improves the Bulldogs to 2-0 in SoCon play for the first time since 2012.
The Bulldogs improved to 8-0 under head coach Mike Houston when scoring at least 21 points and now lead the all-time series with Wofford 41-26-1.
The Citadel (3-2, 2-0) controlled the game from beginning to end, jumping out to a quick 14-0 lead after two Dominique Allen rushing touchdowns. The sophomore found the end zone from one yard and 24 yards out. This game marks the third time this season in which Allen recorded multiple rushing touchdowns and also tied his single-game career high.
Wofford would get on the board in the second quarter after punching it in from three yards out. The PAT failed, making it 14-6 with a little over four minutes remaining in the half.
On the ensuing drive, Reggie Williams received the handoff from Allen and scored from 17 yards out. The nine-play, 69-yard drive made the score 21-6 heading into halftime.
The Bulldogs continued to pour it on in the second half after Tyler Renew got in on the action and scored from three yards out on The Citadel's first drive to stretch the lead to 28-6. The scores for Williams and Renew were their first of the season.
Wofford (3-3, 1-1) scored its only other points of the game with four minutes remaining in the third quarter after an eight-yard run. The Terriers attempted the two-point conversion but the rush attempt was stopped, making the score 28-12.
The Citadel tacked on two more scores, with the first one coming off a 24-yard pass from Allen. Allen connected with Brandon Eakins for the first touchdown in the air by either team in the game. The two-point conversion pass from Allen to Isiaha Smith was good, pushing the Bulldogs lead to 36-12. The touchdown was Eakins' first of the season.
The only score of the fourth quarter for either team would come with six minutes remaining after Eric Goins connected on a 23-yard field goal attempt for the final margin.
Wofford attempted a desperate heave with just seconds remaining on the clock but the pass was picked off Dondray Copeland who returned the ball for a touchdown. However, after multiple flags were thrown on the play, the ball was spotted at the 15-yard line and The Citadel took a knee to solidify their defeat over Wofford.
The Citadel will travel to SoCon foe Samford on Oct. 17 for a 3 p.m. kickoff. The Bulldogs are at Furman the next week before returning to Johnson Hagood Stadium on Oct. 31 when they take on Mercer at 2 p.m. For tickets, visit CitadelSports.com/tickets or call 843-953-DOGS (3647).
