CHARLESTON, S.C. – The Citadel women's soccer team fell to SoCon opponent Samford on Friday afternoon 5-0.
The game was originally scheduled for 5:30 p.m. but due to concerns with the weather, the game was moved to 2 p.m. on Summerall Field.
Malcanisha Kelley got Samford (8-4, 3-0) on the board first with her goal 13 minutes into the game. The score came after a great diving save by keeper
Abby Koger but Kelley managed to find the ball again and knock it in for the 1-0 advantage. The Bulldogs would take a 3-0 lead into halftime.
In the second half, Samford would score again in the 49th minute and the 76th minute to make the final 5-0. Goalkeeper Katie Peters recorded six saves.
Koger tallied eight saves in 45 minutes of work for the Bulldogs and fellow keeper
Kim Mora recorded four saves. The Citadel (1-11, 0-2) had 12 shots in the game and were led by
Ana Vilkia Da Costa,
Ilana Green and
Mady Riegel who each knotched three in the game. Da Costa and Green had two shots on goal.
"Samford has been through a great deal this season and still continue to play at a high level," head coach
Bob Winch said. "I thought Coach Jay Yelton did a great job today."
