CHARLESTON, S.C. – The Citadel basketball team downed Voorhees College 89-85 on Tuesday night inside McAlister Field House. The Bulldogs shot 75 percent from the free throw line and forced 24 turnovers en route to their sixth win of the season. Last season, The Citadel did not reach six wins until January 5.
Â
Senior
Derrick Henry paced the Bulldogs (6-4) with 21 points behind an 11-for-14 effort from the free throw line. He tallied 19 of his 21 points in the second half to help stave off the Tigers' (9-5) comeback attempts. Senior captain
Quinton Marshall added 18 points, five rebounds and four assists.Â
Â
The Bulldogs outrebounded the Tigers 49-39 and hit 10 three-pointers in the game as
Brian White led the team with nine rebounds to complement 18 points in 28 minutes. The Citadel has made 10 or more three-pointers in seven of its first 10 games.
Â
Marshall notched 15 of his 18 points in the first half to counter Voorhees' hot shooting. The Tigers finished the first half shooting 58 percent from the beyond the arc and 46 percent from the field. Marshall buried one of his three treys to knot the score at 43-43, but four free throws in the final 20 seconds handed Voorhees a 47-43 edge at halftime.
Â
A huge 18-0 second-half run by the Bulldogs erased a 58-49 deficit and catapulted them in front by nine with 12:19 remaining. Henry began bulldozing through lane, finishing a pair of tough buckets during the momentum swing. His ability to knife his way to the basket set up open looks for shooters on the wing, including freshman
Quayson Williams, who rattled home a three-pointer and a jumper to help The Citadel surge ahead for good.
Â
Voorhees managed to stay within 10 throughout the remainder of the game, but the Bulldogs finished off the victory by cashing in at the charity stripe. Henry made 5-of-6 at the line in the final five minutes and is now 46-of-53 (86.8 percent) on the season.
Â
The Bulldogs now turn to a three-game road swing beginning on Dec. 16 at Bethune-Cookman. They finish December with a trip to Campbell on Dec. 19 and Charlotte on Dec. 29.Â
