CHARLESTON, S.C. - The Citadel heads into a busy week of baseball with five games in six days at Riley Park beginning with a matchup against former Southern Conference rival Georgia Southern on Tuesday at 6.
The Bulldogs, 10-7 on the year and riding a five-game winning streak, also face Winthrop on Wednesday at 5 and host UMBC in a three-game series beginning on Friday at 6 and continuing on Saturday at 2 and Sunday at 1.
All five games can be seen free of charge on the
SoCon Digital Network.
The Citadel is going for a sweep of the season series against Georgia Southern, which won last year's SoCon Tournament at Riley Park before departing for the Sun Belt. The game against Winthrop is the first of two this year after last Wednesday's contest in Rock Hill was rained out.
That postponement against Winthrop will be made up in Rock Hill on Tuesday, March 24.
The Bulldogs defeated Georgia Southern 3-2 in Statesboro on Feb. 24 behind five innings of three-hit shutout ball from starter
JP Sears and a two-run homer from
Stephen Windham. The Eagles hold a 46-38 lead in the all-time series, with all but one meeting (in the 1979 Atlantic Regional) coming with
Fred Jordan as head coach at The Citadel.
Jordan was a pitcher on that 1979 Bulldog squad but did not play in a 5-3 loss to the Eagles in Coral Gables, Fla.
The Citadel holds a 24-21 lead in the series against Winthrop since Jordan became head coach in 1992. The Bulldogs have won seven in a row, including 3-2 and 7-4 victories last year, and 13 of the last 17 dating back to 2007.
The weekend series against UMBC will be the first meeting between the Bulldogs and Retrievers on the diamond.
