Bulldogs Head to Winthrop and Western This Week

CHARLESTON, S.C. - The Citadel baseball team visits Winthrop on Tuesday in the makeup of an earlier rainout before opening Southern Conference play this weekend at Western Carolina.

The Bulldogs begin the week with a record of 14-8, a mark built on the strength of a nine-game winning streak that ended in the second game of Saturday's doubleheader against UMBC. The Citadel went 10-4 on its recently completed 14-game homestand.

Tuesday's game in Rock Hill starts at 6, and the contests in Cullowhee, N.C., are Friday at 5, Saturday at 2 and Sunday at 1. The games against the Catamounts can be seen on the SoCon Digital Network and heard on SportsRadio 1450 AM with play-by-play announcer Mike Legg.

Winthrop is 15-8 while Western is 9-11 including a 2-1 series loss to UNCG last weekend in its first SoCon series of the year. The Catamounts were picked as the preseason favorites to win the SoCon by the league's coaches and media.

The Bulldogs are looking for a season sweep over Winthrop after scoring twice in the ninth for a 6-5 victory at Riley Park last Wednesday. The Citadel has won eight in a row and 14 of the last 18 over the Eagles.

In a scheduling quirk, The Citadel is playing at Western for the third straight year. The Bulldogs have not won a series in Cullowhee since taking two of three in 2002 and are 13-22 against the Catamounts in the regular season since then.

On the flip side, The Citadel has defeated Western six of eight times in the SoCon Tournament over the same span.
