CHARLESTON, S.C. - The Citadel plays its first home Southern Conference series of the season when the Bulldogs host Mercer in a three-game set beginning Thursday at 6 p.m.
The series, sponsored by Dominos, continues with games on Friday at 5 and Saturday at 1. Please note the Friday first pitch is a change from the originally scheduled time. All three games can be seen on the
SoCon Digital Network.
On Saturday, all members of the Kidet Club will be invited onto the field after the game for an Easter Egg hunt. It will also be a Baseball Bingo Day, sponsored by Allstate.
Beginning with the Mercer series, a half-season punch card will be available for purchase at a cost of $75. The card will be good for 18 admissions to Riley Park for the remainder of the 2015 campaign.
The Citadel will be looking to snap a six-game losing streak including a narrow 2-0 defeat to South Carolina on Tuesday. The Bulldogs are 14-13 overall and 0-3 in the SoCon. Mercer leads the league with a 5-1 record and is 18-12 overall.
This is Mercer's first season in the SoCon and its visit to Charleston this week marks only the fourth meeting with The Citadel since 1991. The Bulldogs lead the all-time series 16-5 and are 1-2 under head coach
Fred Jordan. The teams last met in 2010 with the Bears winning 5-0 at Riley Park.
Two of the top pitchers in the SoCon will square off in the series opener. The Citadel will go with left-hander
James Reeves, who is 4-1 with a 3.49 ERA, striking out 48 and walking only six in 38.2 innings. Mercer counters with senior righty Eric Nyquist, who is also 4-1 and ranks third in the league with a 2.15 ERA and first with an opponent batting average of .151.
Freshman southpaw
JP Sears (4-2, 3.19) will take the hill for the Bulldogs on Friday and face senior lefty Grant Papelian (3-1, 3.82). Neither team has decided on a Saturday starter.
