CHARLESTON, S.C.- The Citadel Tournament game to a close on Saturday evening with The Citadel volleyball team dropping its final two games of the tournament.
In the first game of the day, the Bulldogs (5-10) fell to North Florida in three sets.
Bailey Kernodle and
Moriah Smith led the way for the Bulldogs with eight and seven kills, respectively.
Samantha Espy had 10 digs. As a team, The Citadel had 10 blocks.
In the second match of the day, The Citadel fell to Wright State, 3-1. WSU (10-4) took the first set 25-19 but the Bulldogs came back in the second set with a dominant performance, leading by as much as 10. The Raiders clawed back into the game, closing the gap to 24-22 before
Moriah Smith sealed the deal with a kill, evening the match to one game apiece.
In the third set, Wright State jumped out to a 7-0 lead and continued to pour it on en route to a 25-12 win, making it 2-1 in favor of the Raiders.
The fourth game of the match was a back and forth battle, with neither team gaining an edge until the Raiders were able to string together two kills back to back and earn the win for the set 26-24. Neither team led by more than three in the fourth set.
Junior
Megan Sowell had 15 kills and senior
Bailey Kernodle had 11 to lead the offensive attack for The Citadel. Junior
Samantha Espy led the Bulldogs with 20 digs followed by
Rachel Keefer who had 16. Keefer also had a team high 33 assists, while Espy was named to the all-tournament team.
The Bulldogs return to action at 6 p.m. on Tuesday at Savannah State and then return home to host their first conference game on Saturday at 4 p.m. against East Tennessee State. Live stats will be available at CitadelSports.com.
