BIRMINGHAM, Ala. – The Citadel volleyball team fell in three sets 25-23, 25-22 and 25-15 at Samford on Saturday.
The Bulldogs (6-14, 0-5 SoCon) outhit Samford (12-8, 3-2 SoCon) in the first two sets, hitting .118 in set one and .242 in set two. The Citadel also finished with less attack errors, 18-17, than the Samford Bulldogs for the match. Samford, however, held its largest advantage from the service line, recording nine aces to four errors. The Bulldogs finished with seven service errors and zero aces for the match.
The Citadel opened the match strongly, taking an 11-4 lead and forcing a Samford timeout. The host Bulldogs answered with a 6-1 run to cut The Citadel lead down to two points. The Bulldogs responded with a 6-3 run, forcing another Samford timeout with an 18-13 lead after a Carla Bruce kill. Samford tied the match up for the first time 21-21 and completed the comeback with four of the final six points to take set one 25-23.
The Bulldogs attempted the comeback themselves in the second set after trailing 11-7 midway through. The Citadel tied the match up at 18 apiece, which started a string of eight back-and-forth points. However, Samford took the final three points to take the set 25-22.
In set three, the Bulldogs finished with a hitting percentage of .173, while Samford recorded a match-high .323 hitting percentage to claim the set 25-15.
Middle hitter Dominique Williams led the Bulldogs with eight kills and a perfect 1.000 hitting percentage. Right side hitter Megan Sowell and outside hitter Moriah Smith each added seven kills. Libero Samantha Espy recorded 13 digs to lead the team. Setter Logan Smith finished with 18 assists and Priscilla Irizarry added 14.
The Bulldogs continue Southern Conference play on Sunday, facing to Greenville, South Carolina for a 2 p.m. match against Furman. Live video and stats will be available for the match.
