Bulldogs Fall to Western Carolina

CHARLESTON, S.C. - The Citadel basketball team (10-19, 3-13) fell to Western Carolina (13-16, 8-8) 102-97 in a wild back-and-forth affair at McAlister Field House. After scoring just 51 total points on Thursday, the Bulldogs shredded the nets with 13 three-pointers Saturday, but the Catamounts put together a game-winning run midway through the second half to seal it.

In his 114th game in a Bulldog uniform and final contest at McAlister Field House, forward Quinton Marshall shined on senior day. He poured in a team-high 22 points to secure his fifth career 20-point game. Freshman Quayson Williams tossed in 19 points and made five treys for the third time this season while senior Derrick Henry contributed 19 points fueled by an 11-for-14 effort from the free throw line. Elsewhere, junior center Tom Koopman came off the bench to match his career high with eight points on five shots.

In a first half that featured a blistering pace, Marshall and Williams powered The Citadel to a hot-shooting frame. The duo combined for 29 first half points on a combined 10-for-12 performance from the field. The Bulldogs piled up 54 points by halftime and held a one-point lead at the break. Saturday's seesaw contest finished with nine lead changes.

The Citadel's effectiveness from beyond the arc tapered off down the stretch and Western Carolina took advantage. After a pair of free throws from Henry, The Citadel trailed 74-73 at the 10:16 mark, but the Catamounts responded with a 10-1 run to open up an 84-74 advantage. The Bulldogs scrapped to keep the deficit from growing and freshman Matt Frierson provided a much-needed punch in the final minutes to give The Citadel a chance late.

Frierson buried his only two three-pointers of the game on back-to-back possessions with less than a minute remaining and cut Western Carolina's lead down to 100-97. The Catamounts iced the game at the free throw line and the Bulldogs' comeback attempt fell short. The Citadel now wraps up the regular season with a road trip next week as the Bulldogs travel to UNCG on Feb. 25 and VMI on Feb. 27. For all the latest on The Citadel basketball, follow @CitadelHoops and stay tuned to CitadelSports.com.
