CHARLESTON, S.C. – Richard Wieters, a four-year baseball letterman at The Citadel, has been named to the South Carolina Athletic Hall of Fame Class of 2016, it was announced Monday.
Wieters lettered for the Bulldogs from 1974-77 and was twice named Southern Conference Player of the Year. At the plate, he had a .343 career batting average with 11 home runs and 84 RBI and posted an on-base percentage of .391. He led The Citadel in hits each of his final three years and batted .418 as a junior. He made 35 career appearances on the mound with 28 starts and registered a 2.10 earned-run average with 176 strikeouts and 85 walks. He finished with an 18-10 record, including 15 complete games with three shutouts, and two saves.
Wieters was a third-team All-American as a designated hitter and earned Academic All-America citations. He was an All-South Carolina performer and was named South Carolina Player of the Year at two different positions. He also was awarded the Senior Class Sportsmanship Award in 1977. After graduation, he played in the minor leagues for the Atlanta Braves and Chicago White Sox organizations.
Wieters is the 12th Bulldog to be inducted into the South Carolina Athletic Hall of Fame. He was inducted into The Citadel Athletic Hall of Fame in 1985 and the Charleston Baseball Hall of Fame in 2008. Wieters is currently a CPA in Charleston, and his son, Matt, is an All-Star catcher for the Baltimore Orioles.
