CHARLESTON, S.C. – The Citadel tennis team fell 7-0 in its home opener against Appalachian State on Saturday afternoon at the Earle Tennis Center.
"The credit in winning a very hard-fought match goes to Appalachian State," head coach
Chuck Kriese said. "We extended the match at nearly every position; however, at closing time, they stepped up and did better than we did. The guys continue to grow. We have to keep knocking on the door, and we will break through soon. Little things matter a lot, and all of the guys are working hard to take care of them. We are looking forward to a tough week of practice to prepare us for next weekend's matches."
The Bulldogs (7-10) pushed three of the six singles matches to a deciding third set, but Appalachian State (6-3) was able to prevail in each match. Senior
Jackson Pride took his first set in a tiebreaker at No. 4, and sophomore
Nicholas Bradley bounced back from a first-set tiebreaker loss to win his second set at No. 2. Freshman
Trey Davis also won his second set at No. 6.
In doubles, Bradley and classmate
Artemie Amari pushed their match at No. 1 to a tiebreaker but dropped the matchup 7-6.
The Citadel continues a stretch of six consecutive home matches with a doubleheader March 6. The Bulldogs host East Carolina at 9 a.m. and Campbell at 2 p.m.
