Georgia Gwinnett Results | Point Results
LAWRENCEVILLE, Ga. – The Citadel men's tennis team traveled south on Saturday to take on Georgia Gwinnett and Point University as it continued its non-conference slate. The Bulldogs dropped their first match of the day to Georgia Gwinnett 7-0 but then picked up their second win of the season with a 7-0 win over Point.
Â
The reigning NAIA National Champions swept the doubles point despite a tough fight from
Matthew Henson and
Michael Anzalone. In the singles matchups,
Artemie Amari forced Georgia Gwinnett to an extra game before eventually taking the 7-6 loss in the first set.
Â
In the afternoon contest, the Bulldogs took the first doubles matchup after a strong showing by Amari and
Nicholas Bradley who won 8-4 but it would come down to
Connor Grady and
Joe Bove to secure the doubles point after they edged the Skyhawks 8-7. In singles competition, The Citadel easily dispatched of Point as they swept all six of the matchups en route to the 7-0 win.
Â
"Georgia Gwinnett might be the best team in the country and are two-time national champions," head coach
Chuck Kriese said. "The Point match was tough from start to finish.
Connor Grady poached twice in the tiebreaker to close out the match. That took a lot of guts and his athleticism and heart showed. That go-ahead gave us a boost and the guys played very tough in singles. There was a lot of pride on the court today."
Â
The Citadel returns to action Sunday when they travel to Brevard to face the Tornadoes in a 1 p.m. match. Results will be available at CitadelSports.com following the completion of the contest.
