CHARLESTON, S.C. – The Citadel tennis team was defeated 7-0 by Samford on Tuesday afternoon at the Earle Tennis Center.
The Citadel (8-20, 0-2) had its chances for the opening point, taking leads at No. 1 and No. 2 doubles, but Samford (9-4, 3-1) battled back and won the top two doubles matchups by identical 7-6 scores.
"We for sure give Samford credit for winning today," head coach
Chuck Kriese said. "It's disappointing that we served for both number one and number two doubles and did not close it out. That momentum swing helped them. They were one of the finer teams that we played off of the ground. The ground game is like the line of scrimmage in football. If you're two percent better it makes a big difference, and they were probably one to two percent better. We need to make up this difference and continue to improve each match out. Both teams competed well."
The Citadel was unable to generate much traction in singles, and Samford clinched the team victory with straight-set victories at No. 1, No. 3, No. 4, No. 5 and No. 6 in the lineup. The battle at No. 2 was pushed to a third set, but sophomore
Artemie Amari eventually fell 6-3, 4-6, 7-6 as Samford completed the sweep.
The Citadel continues its three-match conference stretch this weekend. The Bulldogs travel to face Furman on Friday at 3 p.m. and play at Mercer on Saturday at Noon. Live stats from the Furman match will be available at CitadelSports.com.
