Bulldogs' Comeback Falls Short

Box Score (PDF)

CHARLESTON, S.C.
– The Citadel baseball team's rally from a nine-run deficit fell just short on Sunday afternoon inside Joe Riley Park.

The Cougars (7-4) jumped out to an early 5-0 lead behind just one hit in the first inning as The Citadel pitching staff struggled to find the strike zone. The Bulldogs scored two runs of their own in the bottom of the first to make the score 5-2 in favor of the College of Charleston. Neither starter made it past the first inning in the four-hour game and freshman Dylan Spence was saddled with the loss in his first career start.

The Citadel had 16 hits in the game compared to the Cougars' 10 and were led by William Kinney and Clay Martin who each had three. All but one starter recorded a hit for each team in a game that saw 17 different pitchers. The 16 hits matches a season-high equaling the team's total from Feb. 26 against Siena.

The Bulldogs (5-5) trailed 12-3 heading into the bottom of the sixth before exploding for five runs in the frame to pull within four. The Bulldogs had a chance for even more runs but ended the inning with the bases loaded. The Citadel tacked on another run in the bottom of the eighth to make it 12-9. The pitching staff did not allow another College of Charleston run to cross the plate after the sixth inning.

Catcher Stephen Windham continued to pick runners off on the base paths, throwing out three runners attempting to steal second to give him five over the last two games. The senior also had three RBI on two hits.

The Citadel returns to action for two midweek contests on Tuesday and Wednesday at Joe Riley Park. First up for the Bulldogs will be a 6 p.m. matchup against USC Upstate and then a 6 p.m. game against Richmond on Wednesday. Live stats and video will be available for both games at CitadelSports.com. For tickets, call 843-953-DOGS (3647) or visit CitadelSports.com/tickets.
