Notes
• The Citadel dropped three close contests to the College of Charleston over the weekend 5-1, 1-0 and 12-9. Saturday's 1-0 loss at Patriots Point was the first road game of the season for the Bulldogs.
• The Bulldogs tallied only five hits on Friday and Saturday but outhit the Cougars 16-10 on Sunday. The 16 hits and 39 at bats matched a season-high equaling the team's total from Feb. 26 against Siena.
• Catcher Stephen Windham threw out five runners in two games over the weekend. Runners are now 5-11 (.455) on stolen base attempts against the senior.
• The Citadel recorded a season-high 15 assists in consecutive games on Saturday and Sunday.
• With neither starter making it past the first inning on Sunday, the Bulldogs and Cougars combined to use 17 pitchers and throw 410 pitches.
• This will be the first time the Bulldogs have faced USC Upstate since March 12, 2014, when The Citadel took a 9-8 victory over the Spartans. That season, the Bulldogs and Spartans split the two matchups with each team winning at home.
• The Citadel last faced Richmond on February 18, 2012, at Joe Riley Park as part of The Citadel Memorial Challenge. The 10-7 win over the Spiders was the first of the season for the Bulldogs.
• The Watcher brothers, Jacob and Philip, have played in every game this season either at second base or on the mound.
• Jacob (#31) has started four of the 10 games at second base and has made four appearances on the bump this season including 2.2 innings against South Carolina. He has fanned 8 batters this year and did not allow a hit in the 2.0 innings against College of Charleston on March 6. He is batting .286 this season with four hits.
• Philip (#2) has thrown 6.0 innings so far this season including 3.0 against Siena in his first start of the season. He has eight hits and is batting .333 including a one-out single that scored two and put the Bulldogs ahead for good in a 5-4 win over Virginia Tech on Feb. 20. Philip has started six games at second base and has tallied 19 assists this year.
• For the first time since February of last season, six or more players recorded multiple hits for the Bulldogs on March 6 against the College of Charleston.
• Clay Martin got his first start of the season on March 4 and proceeded to play in every game of the series against CofC. Martin recorded for hits over the weekend including three on Sunday against the Cougars. The sophomore is batting .417 this season and has appeared in seven games.
• The pitching combination of Thomas Byelick and Zach Lavery has worked well for the Bulldogs this season. In two of the three Saturday games this season, the duo have been the only pitchers to take the mound for the Bulldogs. Those two contests, against Siena on Feb. 27 and CofC on March 5, are the only games that the Bulldogs have only used two pitchers.
• The Citadel is currently second in the Southern Conference with a 4.35 ERA. The Bulldogs have allowed 50 runs in 89.0 innings. The pitching staff also holds a game-high in the SoCon with 17 total strikeouts that came on Feb. 19 against Virginia Tech.
• After fanning three batters on March 4, JP Sears now has 101 strikeouts in his career. The sophomore is 2-1 this season with a 1.62 ERA.
• Thomas Byelick continues to be dominant on the mound this season, allowing just one run to cross the plate on Saturday against CofC. He is currently sixth in the conference with a 1.71 ERA. Byelick is also second in the SoCon with 21.0 innings pitched
• Sears is fourth in the SoCon with a 1.62 ERA and fifth in the conference with opposing batters averaging .204 against him. He has pitched 16.2 innings in three appearances.
