CHARLESTON, S.C. – The Citadel tennis team was defeated 5-2 by Chattanooga and 6-1 by College of Charleston on Sunday.
"This group of guys gives everything when they're on the court, and they are growing by leaps and bounds," head coach
Chuck Kriese said. "Our young players have come a long way, and we are right on the brink. We just need more matches and more reps. We're glad for a few days of rest now, and we hope to make a good run in the last couple of weeks of the season."
The Citadel (8-26, 0-5 SoCon) battled closely at No. 1 and No. 2 doubles against Chattanooga (6-11, 1-3), but the Mocs were able to claim 7-5 and 6-4 wins at the top two positions to take the early team point. The Bulldogs tallied their two team points in singles. Freshman
Michael Anzalone grabbed a 6-2, 6-4 win at No. 5 and classmate
Matthew Henson took his first set 6-3 at No. 3 before his opponent was forced to retire due to injury.
"The Chattanooga match was extremely competitive," Coach Kriese said. "Basically, we needed to close out the doubles matches when we were in a position to do so."
College of Charleston (13-6) jumped out to an early lead in the evening match at Patriots Point by sweeping the doubles matches. The Cougars continued to win in singles, taking five of the matches in straight sets to clinch the team win. At the No. 2 position, sophomore
Artemie Amari earned his team-high 13th win of the season with a 4-6, 6-4, 10-8 victory for the Citadel's team point.
"Our doubles were poor against the College of Charleston," Coach Kriese said. "The singles were very competitive, but you have to give them the edge on being a little bit better than us right now."
The Bulldogs have 10 days off before resuming SoCon play at Wofford on April 13. The Citadel plays its final two home matches April 16 against ETSU and USC-Sumter, and the Southern Conference Tournament begins April 21 in Chattanooga, Tennessee.
