Bulldogs Set for SoCon Outdoor Championships

CHARLESTON, S.C. – The Citadel track and field teams travel to Cullowhee, North Carolina, this week for the 2016 Southern Conference Outdoor Championships. Action from Western Carolina's Catamount Athletic Complex begins Thursday and wraps up Friday.
The Bulldogs are sending 36 cadet-athletes to the SoCon Championships, including 25 men and 11 women. Twenty-two of The Citadel's participating cadet-athletes will compete in multiple events. The men's squad is seeking to finish in the top five at the outdoor championships as a team for the 18th consecutive season while the women's squad is looking to improve upon its seventh-place finish last spring.
At last year's conference championship, The Citadel saw 13 Bulldogs earn all-conference recognition, including both the men's and women's 4x400-meter relay teams, for finishing in the top three of their respective events. Sophomore Derrick Freeland is set to repeat his 2015 all-conference performance in the shot put while sophomores Ty'Rhonza Harris, Mady Riegel, Devin Singleton and Griffin Miller are ready to build on last year's all-freshman outings when the meet begins Thursday.
Graduate senior Capers Williamson is poised to win back-to-back conference championships in the javelin throw after claiming an event title in 2015. Williamson, who currently ranks 27th nationally in the javelin, finished second overall in the SoCon in both 2013 and 2014. The javelin throw is slated to begin at 3 p.m. Thursday.
The top 48 javelin throwers in the NCAA East Region qualify for the NCAA East Regional in Jacksonville, Florida, which runs May 26-28. Williamson comfortably ranks 15th among NCAA East Region competitors heading into the SoCon Championships.
