GREENVILLE, S.C.
– The Citadel baseball team's 2016 season came to an end on Thursday morning after suffering a narrow 4-2 loss to ETSU in the Southern Conference Tournament.

ETSU (27-29) took an early lead in the first frame, scoring one run on a ground out and then added two more on two hits in the bottom of the third to make it 3-0.

The Citadel (17-42) responded with one run of its own in the top of the fifth courtesy of a two-out single to left field by William Kinney that scored Barrett Charpia. Charpia tallied the Bulldog's first hit of the game two batters earlier with his fifth double this season, lacing the one-out shot to right center field.

Shy Phillips cut the Bucs' lead to two in the top of the seventh with his first career home run over the left center field wall. The solo shot went an estimated 374 feet.

In the top of the ninth, Bret Hines led off with a ground-rule double bringing Charpia to the plate. Charpia singled to advance Hines to third and forced ETSU to make a pitching change with Phillips coming to the plate. Phillips laid down a sacrifice bunt to advance Charpia to second and then Kinney walked to load the bases but a pop up in foul territory and a strikeout for the second and third outs ended the inning.

Thomas Byelick got the start on the mound, working 4.0 innings before being relieved by Zach Lavery. Lavery tossed 4.0 innings and surrendered just three hits, matching his career high previously set against Charleston Southern on March 29.

Charpia tallied two hits for the Bulldogs and scored one run. Seniors Hines and Mike Deese each recorded a hit in their last collegiate game.
