CHARLESTON, S.C. – The Citadel women's soccer team came up just short in its first preseason game on Sunday afternoon, dropping a close 2-1 decision to Winthrop.

The format of the exhibition game was three 30-minute periods, and the Bulldogs took a quick lead at the 23-minute mark in the first period thanks to a goal by junior captain
Tinslee Dilday. After a shot by
Montana Hinson was saved, Dilday collected the ball inside the box and knocked it into the right side of the net.

Winthrop answered with a goal of its own in the 64th minute after Greta Conboy received a cross from Keeley Leising and snuck one by freshman goal keeper
Logan Leask to even things at 1-1.

The score remained 1-1 heading into the last 30 minutes of play but a late goal by Winthrop gave the Eagles the lead and the win.

In
Ciaran Traquair's first game at the helm of the soccer program, the Bulldogs tallied 11 shots and six shots on goal compared to Winthrop's four shots on goal. Leask played all 90 minutes in the net, collecting two saves.

The Bulldogs are scheduled to wrap up the preseason slate on Tuesday with an exhibition game against USC Beaufort. Kickoff is set for 2 p.m. and admission to W.L.I. Field is free. For more information on The Citadel soccer, follow
