CHARLESTON, S.C. – The Citadel women's soccer team was narrowly defeated on Sunday afternoon after allowing two second half goals to non-conference foe Jacksonville State.
Â
"These games leading up to conference play are very important to iron out mistakes and make sure we are prepared," The Citadel head coach
Ciaran Traquair said. Â "Although there is disappointment because of the way this game worked out, this week our focus will go on to making sure we can compete and give ETSU a really tough test to start off SoCon play."
Â
In the 29th minute, The Citadel (3-4) took a 1-0 lead in the contest on a goal by
Samara Nche. Nche received the ball in the box on a throw-in by
Sam Waarum and was able to beat the defender and find the left side of the net for her first goal as a Bulldog.
Â
The score remained 1-0 heading into halftime but Jacksonville State (3-5-1) came out firing in the second half, registering 18 shots in the second 45 minutes of play.
Â
Goalkeeper
Logan Leask was challenged often in the second half but made two huge saves in the 51st minute to preserve the Bulldogs 1-0 lead. The freshman finished the game with 10 saves in 90 minutes of play.
Â
The Gamecocks tallied the equalizer at the 59 minute mark after Leask was unable to corral the ball on the initial shot and Jacksonville State collected the rebound and knocked it in to make it 1-1. The Gamecocks took the lead for good three minutes later on a shot from inside the box that just got by Leask.
Â
The Bulldogs made a furious comeback attempt with just under two minutes remaining but a shot by
Emilie Valenciano with 20 seconds left on the clock went just right of the goal and Jacksonville State claimed the 2-1 win. The Citadel had four players with two shots in the game and tallied 12 as a team.
Tinslee Dilday led the team with two shots on goal.
Â
The Bulldogs wrap up a five-game home stand and begin Southern Conference play at W.L.I. Field next weekend when ETSU and Western Carolina come to town. Live stats and video will be available for both games at CitadelSports.com. For more information on The Citadel soccer, follow
