CHARLESTON, S.C. – The Citadel women's soccer team put together another stout Sunday performance against a strong Samford team on Sunday afternoon, but the visiting Bulldogs from Birmingham were able to claim a 2-1 victory at Washington Light Infantry (WLI) Field in Southern Conference (SoCon) action.
The homestanding Bulldogs (5-10, 0-7 SoCon) got on the board first when
Logan Dix put the ball into the back of the net after the Samford keeper attempted to punch out a service from
Sam Waarum. Instead of sending the ball out of the box, it went backwards, and after getting jostled around in front of the net, Dix put her head to the ball for the score.
The lead lasted for just over 10 minutes before Samford's leading scorer on the year, Jermaine Seoposenwe, tied the game up with a penalty kick that was the result of a Citadel handball in the box. Seoposenwe put the kick into the upper left 90 of the goal for her 10
th score of the year.
In the second half, Samford (11-5-1, 7-0 SoCon) came out firing on all cylinders and Erin Bonner gave the visiting Bulldogs from Birmingham the 2-1 lead in the 63
rd minute, cleaning up a deflected cross.
Samford out-shot The Citadel 23-5 in the contest with 11 shots coming on frame, forcing
Logan Leask (L, 1-8) to make nine saves while Anna Maddox (W, 10-4-1) made just two saves on the afternoon.
Prior to the game, The Citadel recognized seniors
Tori Zeltner,
Tinslee Dilday and
