CHARLESTON, S.C. –The Citadel volleyball team defeated Southern Conference opponent Mercer for the first time in school history on Friday, Oct. 20 in McAlister Field House, the Bulldogs' second conference win of the season.
The Bulldogs (8-18, 2-7 SoCon) had a hot start against the Bears (7-14, 2-7) to win the first set 25-21. The Bears then answered with a 25-20 victory in the second set before The Citadel returned with a 25-22 win in the third. The Bears won set four, 25-15, but couldn't hang on and dropped the final set 15-11 to give the Bulldogs the 3-2 victory.
Senior
Moriah Smith led the Bulldogs in attacks with 20 kills, her second-most this season. Smith also tied with senior
Zuri Fenderson and sophomore
Sarah Dobrich with three block assists on the night.
Freshman
Megan Fuhr led the squad with 24 assists and freshman
McKenzie Boland was close behind with 20.
Next up, the Bulldogs will host SoCon foe Samford on Saturday at 2:00 p.m. The last time The Citadel competed against Samford was Friday, Sept. 22 in Birmingham, Ala., where the Bulldogs defeated Samford for the first time in school history, 3-0.
For the "Dig Pink" Saturday match, The Citadel athletics teams up with Lowcountry Cancer Survivors in support of Breast Cancer awareness. There will be in-match giveaways during the match for pink Adidas gear.
