The Bulldogs will try to shake off a frustrating loss to Western Carolina in their home finale last weekend, 31-19. The Citadel committed five turnovers – three in the red zone – in the loss, leaving the Bulldogs to only spoil rival Furman's postseason hopes and SoCon title aspirations in their conference finale.
The Citadel needs a win to capture a third consecutive winning season, which hasn't been done since the early 90's, ahead of a trip to Clemson next weekend. A win would also be the 30
th for a group of seniors that can match the program record.
"There's still plenty to play for," Thompson "Getting to six wins for a winning season is important for the seniors and the program. Obviously, it's a rivalry game, which adds to the meaning a little. We have a chance to play the role of spoiler, as well, something that hasn't happened much for us the last two years. It's not the role we want, be we have to embrace it the next two weeks and finish on a high note."
The Bulldogs continue to lead the SoCon and are second nationally in rushing yards per game, averaging 327 yards per game on the ground. Quarterback
Dom Allen had a season-high 116 yards and a rushing TD last weekend against WCU. The Bulldogs were also 8-of-16 on third down and converted three fourth down attempts in the game.
Defensively, the Bulldogs continue to lead the SoCon in Total Defense (299.7 ypg) at just under 300 yards per game. For the first time this season, big plays stung the Bulldogs' defense last week against Western Carolina. The Catamounts got an 81-yard TD run from
Detrez Newsome on their first play of the second half as WCU snatched momentum back after The Citadel had tied the game at 17-17. Linebacker
Myles Pierce continues to perform as one of the top players in the SoCon. He leads the Bulldogs with 73 tackles and 12 tackles for loss.
Furman (6-3, 5-1 SoCon) is riding a six-game winning streak after an 0-3 start. The Paladins are tied for the SoCon lead with one loss, but face contrasting styles in the Bulldogs at home tomorrow and at Samford to close out the regular season next weekend.
Paladin quarterback
P.J. Blazejowski is completing 61 percent of his passes with 14 touchdowns and three interceptions in Furman's hybrid-option attack. The Paladins are second in the SoCon in total offense at over 426 yards per game and are fourth in the league at 243 yards rushing per game.
Furman enjoyed a timely off week to prepare for the Bulldogs' triple option. Their last game came in a deluge at Western Carolina, a 28-6 Furman win.
The Citadel closes out the regular season next weekend at Clemson. Kickoff, announced earlier this week, is at 12:20 p.m. The game will be carried on the ACC Network.
