Box Score 2 SUMTER, S.C. – The Citadel tennis team defeated Benedict and USC Sumter to start the USC Sumter Invitational on Friday. Â

The Bulldogs (3-8) won 8-1 over the Benedict Tigers (0-3), giving head coach
Chuck Kriese his 700th career win. Coach Kriese has an average of 37.5 wins in 35 full seasons. Â

The Tigers had an early win in the doubles competition at the No. 1 position, but doubles duo senior
Connor Grady and freshman
Noah Nawabi defeated Armando Flores and Juan Hernandez 8-0 at the No. 2 position. The Bulldogs regained momentum to take the last doubles set with a walk over.

In the singles competition sophomore
Michael Anzalone won 6-3, 6-4 at the No. 1 position, sophomore
Matthew Henson won 6-1, 6-1 at the No. 2 position, Nawabi won at the No. 3 position 6-0, 6-0 and sophomore
Roy Hobson won 6-1, 6-4 at the No. 4 position.

The Citadel then faced USC Sumter and swept the doubles competition. Hobson and Henson won 8-4 at the No. 1 spot, Grady and Nawabi won 8-0 in the second position and freshman
Isaac Stolar and Anzalone won 8-5 at the No. 3 position.

Henson won 6-4, 6-0 at the No. 2 position in the singles competition, Nawabi won 6-2, 6-1 at the No. 3 spot, Hobson won 6-0, 6-0 at the No. 4 position, sophomore
Trey Davis won 6-2, 6-0 at the No. 5 spot and senior
Joe Bove took the No. 6 position with a score of 7-6, 7-6. This gave the Bulldogs the edge to win 8-1 over the Fire Ants.

The Bulldogs will continue the invitational on Saturday against Coker at 9:30 a.m. and Spartanburg Methodist at 1:30 p.m. Results for the matches will be available at CitadelSports.com.
