CHARLESTON, S.C. – The Citadel wrestling team fell to Campbell in McAlister Field House on Sunday.
The Campbell Fighting Camels (8-6, 4-1 SoCon) had a hot 12-0 start against the Bulldogs (2-8, 1-3) with two pins in the 184-pound and 197-pound weight classes. The Bulldogs battled back as junior Andrew Szalwinski earned a 6-1 decision in the 133-lb. weight class over Campbell's Collin Stewart.
Campbell's Josh Heil answered with a 9-8 decision over Douglas Gudenburr in the 141-lb. weight class. The Bulldogs regained momentum with two back-to-back victories by junior Ty Buckiso and graduate student Aaron Walker.
Buckiso earned a 7-1 decision over Campbell's Lucas Stewart in the 149-lb. class, and Walker swept the 157-lb. bracket with a pin in 2 minutes, 45 seconds over Jordan Eley. The Fighting Camels won the remaining matches to finish the day with a 31-12 victory.
True freshmen Michael McAleavey and Rian Burris wrestled unattached in the Newberry Open and took first place in their respective weight classes, and freshman Michael Mewhorter finished third in the 174-lb. bracket.
The Bulldogs will continue their season on Thursday when they host SIU-Edwardsville in McAlister Field House at 6 p.m. The match will be broadcast on ESPN3, with live stats available at CitadelSports.com.
