Bulldogs Drop Home Dual Against SoCon Rival VMI

CHARLESTON, S.C.
– The Citadel wrestling team fell in a close 24-21 match to Southern Conference rival VMI on Thursday in McAlister Field House.
 
Senior, 149-pounder Ty Buckiso secured his first pin of the season in 5 minutes, 30 seconds over Michael Hulcher for the VMI Keydets (2-5, 2-2 SoCon). The Bulldogs (1-8, 0-3) also earned points from junior Sawyer Root and sophomore's Douglas Gudenburr, Rian Burris and Michael McAleavey.
 
Root won the 197-pound weight class by an 8-1 decision over Max Gallahan. Gudenburr and Burris also earned decisions in the 141-lb. and 157-lb. weight classes, respectively. McAleavey was the last to put up points for the Bulldogs in with a big pin in 5:31 at 285 pounds.
 
Coming up, The Citadel hosts he 24th-Annual All-Academy Championship on Saturday, Jan. 27. Presented by USAA, the tournament is scheduled to begin at 10 a.m. on Saturday with doors opening at 9 a.m. Admission is $5 for children and $10 for adults, and finals are predicted to begin no earlier than 5:30 p.m. Competing alongside the Bulldogs is Air Force, Army, Coast Guard, Merchant Marine Academy, Navy, Norwich and VMI.
