Tennis Falls 4-3 to Eastern Washington in Home Opener

CHARLESTON, S.C. – The Citadel men's tennis team opened the home portion of the 2018 slate with a hard-fought match against Eastern Washington. Despite showing plenty of fight, the Bulldogs fell 4-3 to the Eagles at the Earle Tennis Center Saturday afternoon.

"Credit goes to the Eagles today. They deserve the win and we will have to grow and keep on working at getting better," said head coach Chuck Kriese. "We had a great three-hour battle and hats off to Eastern Washington for pulling out this barn burner. We lost the doubles point and then we pretty much were playing catch up all day long. I have no problem at all with the effort and guts that our guys showed on the court. We played tough against a very well-coached team and it was just a great college match."

Action started a little earlier than originally planned as the teams attempted to get the match in before rain entered the area.

In doubles action Trey Davis and Noah Nawabi claimed the No. 3 doubles match over Eastern Washington's Martin Bats and Ricardo Almeida, but the Eagles claimed the doubles point behind victories at No. 1 and No. 2 doubles. Scott Paz and Flavien Raveau defeated Roy Hobson and Gavin Stewart 6-2 at No. 1 while Jeremy Field and Victor Pereira defeated Matthew Henson and Will Graham 6-3 at No. 2.

In singles action, Henson defeated Field 5-7, 6-4, 6-4 at No. 3 singles, Stewart defeated Bats 6-4, 6-2 at No. 5 singles and Graham took down Almeida 6-3, 7-5 at No. 6 singles.

Eastern Washington was able to take the match with three points in singles action as Paz defeated Hobson 6-4, 6-2 at No. 1, Raveau defeated Jack Pyritz 6-0, 6-2 at No. 2 singles and Mueller defeated Nawabi 5-7, 6-2, 6-2 in a hard-fought battle at No. 4 singles.

UP NEXT
The Bulldogs will next head to Sumter, South Carolina, to take part in the Sumter Spring Collegiate. The tournament will span Friday, Feb. 2 and Saturday, Feb. 3. The Citadel will not play at home until Saturday, March 3 when the Bulldogs host East Carolina for a doubleheader.
