Soccer Drops SoCon Game, 3-1, at Furman

GREENVILLE, S.C. – After working to a scoreless draw through the first half, Furman exploded for three goals in the closing 45 minutes to defeat The Citadel soccer team, 3-1, Tuesday afternoon at Stone Soccer Stadium in Southern Conference Action.

45:42 – Isabella Gutierrez scored her second goal of the season with a left-footed shot from just inside the box that snuck in just under the crossbar. Elli Laxer assisted on the play.
77:00 – Gutierrez scored her second goal of the game to put Furman up 2-0 with a low finish to the near post. Erin Houlihan and Grace Baghdady were credited with assists on the play.
77:42 – 42 seconds later, freshman Taylor Diggs scored her first collegiate goal with a shot inside the left corner off a free kick from Mel Mikoy.
84:38 – Baghdady scored on a through ball that was passed to her by Kristian Leone to give the Paladins breathing room in the closing minutes.

How it Happened
  • The two worked to a scoreless tie through the first 45 minutes of play with Furman holding a slight 6-5 advantage over The Citadel in shots.
  • Furman broke through in the opening seconds of the second half with a goal to go up 1-0.
  • After Furman went up 2-0 nearly 32 minutes later, Diggs breathed new life into the Bulldogs with her break-through goal.
  • Kessy Bradshaw, Kevyn Banda and Kooba Richard all recorded shots following the Diggs goal in an attempt to find the equalizer.
  • The Paladins out-shot the Bulldogs 10-6 in the second half, and held the 'Dogs to no shots in the first 30-plus minutes of the period.
  • Furman recorded four corner kicks with The Citadel taking two.
  • Katherine Arroyo and Bradshaw each finished the game with three shots while Ellie Burgess chipped in two of her own.

Notables
  • With Diggs' goal in the 78th minute, the Bulldogs have now had six different goal scorers this season, matching the program record set by the 2002 team and matched in 2010. Devyn Nyhart, Emily Mason, Burgess, Bradshaw and Mikoy have all joined Diggs in scoring their first collegiate goals this season.
  • The Bulldogs have scored 29 goals this season, the most since the 2014 team scored 34 goals. The 2012 team scored 38 goals on the year to set the standard, including 12 in the final game of the season against Delaware State.

Next Up
The Citadel will close out the regular season at home this weekend by first welcoming Western Carolina to WLI Field on Friday, Oct. 19 before ETSU comes calling on Sunday, Oct. 21. The game with the Catamounts will kick off at 3 p.m. while the game versus the Bucs will feature a 2 p.m. kickoff. Both games will be streamed on ESPN3.
