Bulldogs Take on Charleston Southern in Midweek Game

CHARLESTON, S.C. – The Citadel baseball team will travel the short distance up Interstate 26 to Charleston Southern on Tuesday, April 17 for a 6 p.m. game in the fourth contest of the 2018 series.

Tuesday night will mark the fourth time this season and 89th time since 1965 that The Citadel and Charleston Southern have met on the baseball diamond. The Bulldogs hold an all-time record of 56-32 over the Buccaneers, including 6-3 since 2015. Earlier this season, the Bulldogs won two of three games in a weekend series over CSU, including an 8-1 win at CSU on Saturday, March 3 and a 6-2 victory on Sunday, March 4 in the finale.

Charleston Southern is currently in the midst of an eight-game losing skid. The Bucs have averaged just over two runs per game in that span while giving up just over six runs per contest, including giving up seven or more runs in four games. As a team, the Bucs are batting .229 and have 59 hits that have gone for extra bases this season. In comparison, their foes have batted .280 with 87 extra-base knocks, including 45 home runs. CSU has batted in 107 of their 115 runs while their opposition boast 181 RBIs on 201 runs scored. On the base paths, CSU has stolen 19 base son 28 attempts while allowing their opponents to swipe 34 bases. The Buccaneers' pitching corps brings a 5.19 earned run average into the game to go along with 334 strikeouts. Opponent pitching staffs have combined for a 2.39 ERA but only 256 strikeouts.

The Buccaneers have been led through the first 38 games by Mike Sconzo's .333 batting average off 47 hits. Sconzo leads the team with 21 runs scored and 18 runs batted in and is tied for tops on the squad with five doubles. He is slugging .426 with an on-base percentage of .383. Jason Miller has batted .275 to this point of the season with Josh Litchfield not far being with a.264. Miller has scored 18 runs and has three doubles while leading the team with five stolen base son 10 attempts. Litchfield brings four doubles and 10 RBIs into Tuesday and is the only Buc to have played every game so far this season. Derek Horton has a team-high five home runs on the year, but has been feast or famine as he also has struck out 52 times and is batting .190.

Tuesday's game at Charleston Southern will be the last midweek game for the Bulldogs for three weeks. The Citadel will next head to Wofford for a three-game, Southern Conference series beginning Friday, April 20. The Bulldogs and Terriers will get things started with a 6 p.m. first pitch on Friday before continuing the series on Saturday, April 21 at 2 p.m. The series finale will feature a 1 p.m. first pitch on Sunday, April 22.
